Topical Authority: How New Web Design Agencies Outrank 10-Year-Old Sites

The silo content strategy we used to rank for competitive web-design queries against agencies with 10x more backlinks. With the exact silo map.

If you publish one article about web design and twenty about whatever is trending, Google has no reason to rank you for web design. Topical authority is the single biggest lever a new agency site has in 2026.

The silo structure (do this exactly)

  1. 01Pillar page (broad term — e.g. /web-design)
  2. 02Sub-pillars (sub-topics — e.g. /web-design/lawyer, /web-design/dentist)
  3. 03Cluster posts (long-tail — 20–50 articles per sub-pillar)
  4. 04Every cluster post links UP to its sub-pillar and SIDEWAYS to siblings

Execute in 30 days

  • Pick ONE pillar (resist the urge to pick three).
  • Map 50 long-tail keywords using AlsoAsked, AnswerThePublic and 'people also ask'.
  • Group them into 4–6 clusters.
  • Write the pillar + 4 sub-pillars first — these are your hubs.
  • Then publish 2–3 cluster posts per week, always linking up and sideways.

Topical authority is slow for the first 60 days and then snowballs. Pick a pillar today and you will outrank legacy sites within a quarter.
